The Laguna Guatavita is 57 kms (35 mi) from Bogota. It is the place where La Legenda El Dorado started. It was thought that in a ritual the Muisca Cacique would cover his body with gold dust and would wash off in the water to celebrate the Gods. After this the tribe would throw all kinds of precious gold jewelry to the lake. The Spanish heard about this legend, they attempted to get the gold. However, very little gold was found.
